Glacier Climbing – Cotopaxi Glacier

Embark on a technical climbing adventure on the majestic glacier of Cotopaxi Volcano (5,897 m).

During this high-altitude expedition, you’ll learn to use specialized equipment such as crampons and ice axes, and master self-belaying, rope progression, and crevasse rescue techniques—guided by ASEGUIM-certified professionals.

All this in a high-mountain setting, surrounded by ice, snow, and breathtaking views of the Andean peaks. No prior experience is required—just good physical condition and an adventurous spirit.

Tour Plan / Itinerary

Duration: Full day

Departure: 8:00 a.m. (from Quito), with transportation to 4,500 m a.s.l.

Return: between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to Quito

Maximum altitude: 5,000 m a.s.l. (on the glacier during the activity)

Hiking level: Advanced

Activity level: Moderate–advanced (technical glacier training, steep terrain, sub-zero temperatures)

Ideal for: Mountain sports enthusiasts, ice climbing enthusiasts, beginners in good physical condition, and those seeking a technical high-altitude experience.

 

Itinerary:

8:00 AM – Departure from Quito and transport to the national park (4,500 m a.s.l.).
Arrival at the “José Ribas” refuge (4,800 m a.s.l.). Equipment session and briefing on safety, technique, and the day’s objectives.
“Glacier school” practice: use of crampons, ice axes, self-belaying technique, and roped team movements on ice slopes. Progressive level, supervised.
Box lunch at the refuge or base camp.
Return to the starting point by vehicle.
Estimated arrival in Quito (8:00 p.m.).

 

Recommendations

Wear layered clothing (thermal base layer, fleece, windbreaker/Gore-Tex), double gloves, hat, and UV-protective sunglasses.
Sturdy hiking boots, ideally crampon-compatible, and trekking poles.
Comfortable backpack (30–40 L), snacks, 1–2 L of water.
Good level of prior acclimatization (4,000 m+).
